Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source that relies on heat continuously being produced inside the earth. It can be used as heat for bathing, to heat buildings, and to generate electricity. In 2014, the CEDRO project published the National Geothermal Energy Assessment for Lebanon that identifies the potential of this important resource.

Geothermal heat pumps, also known as ground source heat pumps, are gaining wide acceptance for both residential and commercial buildings. The technology relies on the relatively constant temperature beneath the earth surface and takes advantage of the heat stored in the earth or in ground water into a building during the winter, and transferring it out of the building and back into the ground during the summer.
