The dry weight of living organisms referred to as "forest biomass" is one important measure of ecosystem productivity, commonly used in quantifying the role of forests in the carbon cycle and the potential of wood products for enegry production. Unsuitable forest management can hinder forest values which cover: biodiversity, recreation, water quality and wildlife habitat. Therefore, guidelines featuring best practices for forest inventory and hence forest management and harvesting plans are fundamental to ensure the sustainable use of forest biomass.
